CertaPro Painters is lacing up the running shoes for the sake of wounded American troops. On May 20 at 9AM CertaPro Painters and friends will meet up at the Ridley Creek State Park in Ridley, PA in support of non-profit Home for Our Troops (HFOT), which will receive all funds raised by the event. Homes for Our Troops has been building specially adapted homes nationwide for severely wounded veterans since 2004.

Scores of selfless troops have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries. CertaPro Painters is honored to join Homes for Our Troops in the non-profit’s dedication to assisting these deserving men and women who have given so much to their country. The local CertaPro Painters franchise owners in the Greater Philadelphia area chose to support Homes for Our Troops because of the incredible value of the organization’s efforts.

Thanks to Homes for Our Troops, many severely injured veterans and their families can receive homes built to give them maximum freedom of movement, which in turn allows them to live more independently. The organization raises donations of money, building materials, professional labor and coordination of the building process for each home.

Funding for the CertaPro Painters Run for Our Troops event will go to helping a disabled or severely wounded veteran in the Philadelphia area. The race is sure to attract runners and walkers of every age, and the kids will especially enjoy the Kids Fun Run with CertaPro Painters mascot, Bristles. For those who are in the Philadelphia area, participants have until May 1 to register for the special price of just $20, which will be money well spent. The main specialty of CertaPro Painters is to revamp an area, whether it is a house, a room, or a business, through interior and exterior painting. CertaPro Painters gets tons of unique referrals, but last month there was one that was a little more special than normal.

Lorena Streb, of CertaPro Painters in Cockeysville received a call from one of the producers of the hit FOX show Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsay, for an unusual offer that she could not refuse. The show focuses on giving struggling restaurants a facelift, and some of the facelift is visual. For this specific project, the FOX producer asked Streb’s CertaPro Painters franchise to re-paint the kitchen of Baltimore’s Café Hon, but with one caveat.

CertaPro Painters needed to be on set from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on a Sunday night to Monday morning so that the paint job could be finished before breakfast customers arrived to the Café Hon.

“We’re used to meeting all sorts of deadlines,” Streb said. “I knew we had the manpower and could make it.”

There was a controversy surrounding the owner of Café Hon, Denise Whiting, in which the restaurant nearly went out of business after she trademarked the Baltimore colloquialism “hon.” Whiting ended up rescinding the trademarked term as part of her strategy to get people back into her business. Nevertheless, CertaPro Painters’ eight-hour job sure helped revamp the struggling restaurant.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for us,” said Streb, who prior to her starting the CertaPro Painters franchise of Cockeysville in 2007 worked in media production for corporate clients. Streb’s paths have crossed with Whiting.

“Denise and I run in the same circles,” she said. “I’ve run into her over and over again through different womens’ organizations and chamber of commerce events. She is a spunky, determined woman.”

Recently, CertaPro had the chance to give back to a family that has given so much to their country.

Army Master Sergeant Christopher Winling’s basement was dank, dark and inhospitable. So much so that he wouldn’t let his twins play down there without adult supervision—a responsibility borne solely by his wife since he was on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan. That’s where CertaPro joined with others to come to the rescue.

Along with other local area businesses, CertaPro volunteered through Operation Homefront, Illinois—a non-profit organization that provides emergency assistance to active duty military families in need—to help remodel the Winling’s spooky basement and turn it into a welcoming family room. The project, in total, cost approximately $50,000. The funds also covered a redo of the family’s living and dining rooms. And CertaPro was there, paint brush and bucket in hand, every inch of the way.

Of course, this was all a big surprise to Master Sergeant Winling. Arriving home for a 30-day-leave from Afghanistan, he was met at the airport by the Warrior’s Watch Riders, a volunteer group that provides motorcycle escorts to the nation’s service personnel. Escorted to his home in Round Lake Beach, Illinois, Winling was more than a little amazed to find the remodeled basement and revamped living and dining rooms.

Winling, the recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart of Meritorious Service after he was injured in an IED blast, could not have been more delighted. And neither could his neighbors, who gathered to make his homecoming a celebration, as well as an opportunity to break in his new family room. For his wife and children, they were just as thrilled to have their daddy back, even for a short time.
